Lille France
I’ve visited Lille several times and it remains one of my favourite cities in northern France for a weekend away. It’s compact enough to explore on foot, but each neighbourhood feels different: from the cobbled streets and independent boutiques of Vieux-Lille to the food market and more local atmosphere of Wazemmes.
I especially love Lille for its combination of French food, beautiful architecture, independent shops and excellent wine bars. In this Lille city guide, I’m sharing my favourite places to stay, eat, shop and drink, plus the best things to do during a weekend in Lille.

Is Lille worth visiting?
Yes, Lille is definitely worth visiting, especially for a weekend city break. The historic centre is compact and walkable, with beautiful Flemish architecture, excellent restaurants, independent boutiques and plenty of cafés and wine bars. Two days is enough to see the main sights and explore neighbourhoods such as Vieux-Lille and Wazemmes.
Best areas to explore in Lille
One of the things I like about Lille is how different the neighbourhoods feel, while most of the city is still easy to explore on foot. I spend most of my time in Vieux-Lille and Lille Centre, but Wazemmes is worth visiting if you want to see a more local side of the city. These are the three areas I would explore during a weekend in Lille.
Vieux-Lille
Vieux-Lille is my favourite area in Lille and where I always end up spending most of my time. The cobbled streets and colourful Flemish façades are beautiful, but for me it’s the combination of independent boutiques, restaurants, coffee shops and wine bars that makes this neighbourhood so enjoyable. Rue des Vieux Murs is a particular favourite: you can shop, stop for coffee and finish with a glass of wine without leaving the street.
Lille Centre
Lille Centre is where you’ll find some of the city’s best-known sights, including Grand Place and the beautiful Vieille Bourse. It’s busier and more commercial than Vieux-Lille, with plenty of shops and restaurants, but it’s an area you’ll naturally walk through several times during a weekend. It’s also a convenient place to stay if you want to explore most of Lille on foot.
Wazemmes
For a different side of Lille, head to Wazemmes. The neighbourhood feels more local and multicultural than the historic centre and is best known for Marché de Wazemmes, one of the city’s largest markets. I would visit in the morning, wander around the market and food stalls, and combine it with breakfast or lunch nearby.

Visit Grand Place and Vieille Bourse
Grand Place, officially Place du Général de Gaulle, is the heart of Lille and a good starting point for exploring the city. The square is surrounded by impressive Flemish architecture, with the 17th-century Vieille Bourse as its highlight. Walk through its courtyard, where you’ll often find second-hand booksellers and, in the warmer months, people playing chess or dancing. From here, it’s only a short walk into Vieux-Lille
Visit Gare Saint-Sauveur
La Gare Saint Sauveur is a former railway station in Lille (Rijsel) and has been transformed into a dynamic cultural venue with a range of exhibitions, events, and installations, making it a hub for contemporary art and cultural experiences in the heart of the city. Bazaar St So is nestled in the iconic Gare Saint Sauveur of Lille.
Parc de la Citadelle and Jardin Vauban
Stroll through Parc de la Citadelle and visit the English Garden at Jardin Vauban. Go for a drinks or food at Le Bus Magique or Oasis. Visit the Lille Zoo or any of the playgrounds if you are with little ones.
Walk along Rue des Vieux Murs
Rue Des Vieux Murs one of Lille's most beautiful streets with trendy Tamper for coffee and breakfast, second hand pre loved shops Jolis Caprices, wine bars Au Gre du Vin and Les Frères Pinard, speciality beer bar L'Abbaye des Saveurs and nice restaurants like La Tiendita Lille. Explore Wazemmes Market
The Wazemmes Food Hall, located in the vibrant Wazemmes neighborhood of Lille, is a bustling marketplace offering an array of fresh, local produce, gourmet delights, and artisanal products. You will also find Café Aux Halles provides a charming respite, where visitors can savor a cup of coffee opposite the market hall.
Visit La Piscine in Roubaix
On your way home from Lille to the Netherlands you can also stop in Roubaix and visit La Piscine Museum (Roubaix) an unique museum housed in a converted Art Deco swimming pool. Next door you'll find Food - La Cantine and some small independent shops.

Where to stay in Lille
For a first weekend in Lille, I would stay in or close to Vieux-Lille or Lille Centre. You can walk to most of the city’s main sights, restaurants and shops from here. I’ve stayed at several hotels in Lille, including OKKO Hotels Lille Centre, Mama Shelter Lille and Eklo Lille.

We stayed one night at Eklo Hotel Lille in a comfort room. Eklo is a concept of sutainable, cheap and friendly hotels in France. There is a nice communal space and garden. The hotel is a good option when travelling through France.

Best Coffee shops in Lille
A good coffee stop is always part of my city trips, and Lille has plenty of places I would happily return to. Coffee Makers is one of my favourites for a proper coffee, while Tamper! Espresso Bar brings back good memories: we stopped here for lunch and coffee when we arrived in Lille, before exploring Rue des Vieux Murs. I also like Paddo for its Australian café vibe and Wally’s for coffee combined with breakfast or brunch. These are my personal favourites for coffee in Lille.

Shopping in Lille: my favourite boutiques
I always make time for shopping when I’m in Lille, especially in Vieux-Lille. It’s exactly the kind of shopping area I like: beautiful streets mixed with French fashion, independent boutiques, vintage and concept stores. Rue des Vieux Murs is a favourite, with pre-loved fashion at Jolis Caprices and plenty of places for coffee or wine nearby. I also like Libertie for its Sézane-like style, and of course Lille has its own L’Appartement Sézane. Joli Caprices Lille is a lovely pre-loved secondhand vintage fashion boutique on the Rue Des Vieux Murs.
Best places for breakfast and lunch in Lille
Breakfast in Lille can be as simple as a really good pain au chocolat from a French boulangerie – we actually went back to Boulangerie Mathieu twice for one. For lunch, I love places such as Tamper! on Rue des Vieux Murs, while Paddo is a good choice if you prefer an Australian-style breakfast or brunch. Boulangerie Mathieu
When the French queue, you know. We went twice for a pain au chocolat at Boulangerie Mathieu. Perfecty located around the corner from the Okko Hotels.
Bart Sandwiches Lille

Tamper! Espresso Bar in Lille is where we had delicious lunch and coffee when we arrived in Lille. It is your perfect stop for exploring the Rue Des Vieux Murs.
Eating well is one of my favourite parts of a weekend in Lille. One of my most memorable dinners was at Bloempot, where we had the surprise menu paired with wine and beer – definitely one I would book ahead for. I also like Lille’s smaller restaurants and bistros, where the atmosphere is just as important as the food. Restaurant Le Bloempot
Restaurant Le Bloempot is always fully booked and a must-visit for those seeking a unique and contemporary dining French cuisine experience in Lille. We really enjoyed a five star surprise menu with pairing wine and beers. Delicious.
Restaurant Le Presentoir Lille
Restaurant Le Presentoir Lille is located in Lille's historic center, Le Presentoir is known for its elegant presentations and seasonal menu, showcasing the finest local produce. There are a few tables downstairs or you can sit at the bar. Upstairs is also a nice athmosphere.
Restaurant Sebastopol
Restaurant Sebastopol is a gastronomic haven in Lille with a menu that evolves with the seasons and a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere. Populair for a reason.
Best Wine Bars in Lille
Lille does wine bars particularly well. One of my favourites is Au Gré du Vin, a small wine bar recommended to us by locals, where we had different wines with charcuterie and cheese. Rue des Vieux Murs is another street I always like returning to – you can combine a glass of wine at Les Frères Pinard with some of my favourite shops and restaurants nearby. For me, this is Lille at its best: a good glass of French wine somewhere small and atmospheric.
Wine Bar Au Gre Du Vin
Wine Bar Au Gre Du Vin- we absolutely loved this cute wine bar which was recommended by the locals. We had different Vins, charcuterie et fromages. J'adore.
Wine Bar Monsieur Jacques
Wine enthusiasts are in for a treat at Wine Bar Monsieur Jacques in Lille. This establishment is dedicated entirely to all things wine. Here, you'll find some stunning examples and wines sourced from various regions across France. Their are wine tasting sessions, and the food menu pairs perfectly with the wines which you can take home too.
Wine Bar Les Freres Pinard
Lille has the cutest wine bars. And the quaint Rue Des Vieux Murs is the place to be. Les Freres Pinard is for the hipster crowd. The terrace outside is the nicest spot. Alternatively, try the high chairs inside.
