The best travel movies

Travel around the world by watching these beautiful films. They will bring you from Brazil to Russia and from Japan to Denmark without having to jet-off. It will hopefully give you the inspiration and the motivation to travel again soon.


We always watched a lot of country related films before we went off travelling, when we returned from our travels or when we were dreaming about visiting a destination. It's all about the art of making memories, and it's also an art to keep hold of them.

Films about Argentina


  • Evita - The hit musical based on the life of Evita Duarte, a B-picture Argentinian actress who eventually became the wife of Argentinian president Juan Perón, and the most beloved and hated woman in Argentina.


Films about Australia


  • Australia - Set in northern Australia before World War II, an English aristocrat who inherits a sprawling ranch reluctantly pacts with a stock-man in order to protect her new property from a takeover plot. As the pair drive 2,000 head of cattle over unforgiving landscape, they experience the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by Japanese forces firsthand.


Films about Brazil


  • Central Station - An emotive journey of a former school teacher, who writes letters for illiterate people, and a young boy, whose mother has just died, as they search for the father he never knew.

  • City of God - In the slums of Rio, two kids' paths diverge as one struggles to become a photographer and the other a kingpin.

  • Elite Squad (Tropa de Elite) - In 1997 Rio de Janeiro, Captain Nascimento has to find a substitute for his position while trying to take down drug dealers and criminals before the Pope visits.


Films about Cambodia


  • The Killing Fields - A journalist is trapped in Cambodia during tyrant Pol Pot's bloody 'Year Zero' cleansing campaign, which claimed the lives of two million 'undesirable' civilians.


Films about Czech Republic


  • Kolya - Franta Louka is a concert cellist in Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia, a confirmed bachelor and a lady's man...when his friend, the grave-digger Mr. Broz, suggests a scheme for making a lot of money by marrying a Russian woman so that she can get her Czech papers, he reluctantly agrees. She takes advantage of the situation...and Kolya must come and live with his stepfather - Louka.



  • A Fortunate Men - Peter is an ambitious young man from a devout Christian family in Western Denmark in the late 19th century, who rebels against his strict father by traveling to the capital to study. He comes to seduce the daughter of a wealthy Jewish family.

  • The Danish Girl - A fictitious love story loosely inspired by the lives of Danish artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Lili and Gerda's marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili's groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.



  • Dunkirk - Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army, and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.

  • Intouchables - After he becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident, an aristocrat hires a young man from the projects to be his caregiver.

  • Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain - Amélie is an innocent and naive girl in Paris with her own sense of justice. She decides to help those around her and, along the way, discovers love.

  • Les Miserables - In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole, agrees to care for a factory worker's daughter. The decision changes their lives forever.

  • Paris, je t'aime - Through the neighborhoods of Paris, love is veiled, revealed, imitated, sucked dry, reinvented and awakened.



  • Das Leben der Anderen - In 1984 East Berlin, an agent of the secret police, conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover, finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed by their lives.

  • Goodbye Lenin - In 1990, to protect his fragile mother from a fatal shock after a long coma, a young man must keep her from learning that her beloved nation of East Germany as she knew it has disappeared.

  • The Pianist - A Polish Jewish musician struggles to survive the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto of World War II.



  • The Salesman - While both participating in a production of "Death of a Salesman," a teacher's wife is assaulted in her new home, which leaves him determined to find the perpetrator over his wife's traumatized objections.



  • Call Me by Your Name - In 1980s Italy, romance blossoms between a seventeen-year-old student and the older man hired as his father's research assistant.

  • Eat, Pray, Love - A married woman realizes how unhappy her marriage really is, and that her life needs to go in a different direction. After a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey to "find herself".

  • La Vita e Bella - When an open-minded Jewish librarian and his son become victims of the Holocaust, he uses a perfect mixture of will, humor, and imagination to protect his son from the dangers around their camp.

  • Il Postino - A simple Italian postman learns to love poetry while delivering mail to a famous poet, and then uses this to woo local beauty Beatrice.

  • Martin Eden - Martin Eden struggles to rise above his destitute, proletarian circumstances through an intense and passionate pursuit of self-education, hoping to achieve a place among the literary elite.



  • Lost in Translation - A faded movie star and a neglected young woman form an unlikely bond after crossing paths in Tokyo.

  • Memoirs of a Geisha - Nitta Sayuri reveals how she transcended her fishing-village roots and became one of Japan's most celebrated geisha.

  • Tokyo Story - An old couple visit their children and grandchildren in the city, but receive little attention.

  • Life of Pi - A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.

  • Lion - A five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.

  • Slumdog Millionaire - A Mumbai teenager reflects on his life after being accused of cheating on the Indian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?".

  • Caramel - A romantic comedy centered on the daily lives of five Lebanese women living in Beirut.

  • Coco - Aspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer.

  • Roma - A year in the life of a middle-class family's maid in Mexico City in the early 1970s.

  • Y Tu Mamá También - In Mexico, two teenage boys and an attractive older woman embark on a road trip and learn a thing or two about life, friendship, sex, and each other.

  • The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind - Against all the odds, a thirteen year old boy in Malawi invents an unconventional way to save his family and village from famine.

  • The Piano - In the mid-19th century, a mute woman is sent to New Zealand along with her young daughter and prized piano for an arranged marriage to a wealthy landowner, but is soon lusted after by a local worker on the plantation.



  • Beyond Sleep - A young geologist ventures out into the vast tundra of northern Norway to finish his research on meteorite craters, only to get hopelessly lost in both the wilderness and his own mind.

  • Ida - A novice nun about to take her vows uncovers a family secret dating back to the German occupation.

  • Doctor Zhivago - The life of a Russian physician and poet who, although married to another, falls in love with a political activist's wife and experiences hardship during World War I and then the October Revolution.



  • Hotel Rwanda - Paul Rusesabagina was a hotel manager who housed over a thousand Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda.

  • Invictus - Nelson Mandela, in his first term as President of South Africa, initiates a unique venture to unite the Apartheid-torn land: enlist the national rugby team on a mission to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

  • Totsi - Six days in the violent life of a young Johannesburg gang leader.


Films about South Korea


  • Parasite - Greed and class discrimination threaten the newly formed symbiotic relationship between the wealthy Park family and the destitute Kim clan.



  • Vicky Christina Barcelona - Two friends on a summer holiday in Spain become enamored with the same painter, unaware that his ex-wife, with whom he has a tempestuous relationship, is about to re-enter the picture.

  • Volver - After her death, a mother returns to her home town in order to fix the situations she couldn't resolve during her life.



  • Seven Years in Tibet - True story of Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountain climber who became friends with the Dalai Lama at the time of China's takeover of Tibet.

  • The Beach - Vicenarian Richard travels to Thailand and finds himself in possession of a strange map. Rumours state that it leads to a solitary beach paradise, a tropical bliss. Excited and intrigued, he sets out to find it.

  • Billy Elliot - A talented young boy becomes torn between his unexpected love of dance and the disintegration of his family.

  • Downton Abbey - The continuing story of the Crawley family, wealthy owners of a large estate in the English countryside in the early twentieth century.

  • Far from the Madding Crowd - In Victorian England, the independent and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak, a sheep farmer; Frank Troy, a reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood, a prosperous and mature bachelor.

  • Lad: A Yorkshire story - A teenage boy forms a friendship with a park ranger in the Yorkshire Dales after the death of his father.

  • Sherlock Holmes - Detective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.

  • The King's Speech - The story of King George VI, his impromptu ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936, and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch overcome his stammer.

  • The Imitation Game - During World War II, the English mathematical genius Alan Turing tries to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians.

  • The Professor and the Madman - Professor James Murray begins work compiling words for the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary in the mid 19th century, and receives over 10,000 entries from a patient at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, Dr. William Minor.

  • Trainspotting - Renton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out, despite the allure of the drugs and influence of friends.

  • Easy Rider - Two bikers head from L.A. to New Orleans through the open country and desert lands, and along the way they meet a man who bridges a counter-culture gap they are unaware of.

  • Into the Wild - After graduating from Emory University, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandons his possessions, gives his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Along the way, Christopher encounters a series of characters that shape his life.

  • La La Land - While navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.

  • Lincoln - As the American Civil War continues to rage, America's president struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on the decision to emancipate the slaves.

  • Milk - The story of Harvey Milk, and his struggles as an American gay activist who fought for gay rights and became California's first openly gay elected official.

  • Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - A faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.

  • Sleepless in Seattle - A recently widowed man's son calls a radio talk-show in an attempt to find his father a partner.

  • The Florida Project - Set over one summer, the film follows precocious six-year-old Moonee as she courts mischief and adventure with her ragtag playmates and bonds with her rebellious but caring mother, all while living in the shadows of Walt Disney World.

  • Apocalypse Now - A U.S. Army officer serving in Vietnam is tasked with assassinating a renegade Special Forces Colonel who sees himself as a god.
