Hotel Chamade Ghent: My Stay & Review

During my latest city break in Ghent, I stayed at Hotel Chamade, a small boutique hotel close to Gent-Sint-Pieters railway station. It’s a particularly convenient location if you’re travelling to Ghent by train: the hotel is just a few minutes’ walk from the station, while a short tram ride takes you straight into the historic city centre.

Hotel Chamade is a three-star hotel with a calm, contemporary feel. Don’t expect a large design hotel surrounded by Ghent’s main tourist attractions. Instead, you’ll find a more personal and comfortable place to stay in the station neighbourhood. For me, it was a lovely base from which to rediscover Ghent.

One of the biggest advantages of Hotel Chamade is its location. The hotel is on Koningin Elisabethlaan, just a few minutes’ walk from Gent-Sint-Pieters railway station. This makes it a very convenient place to stay if you’re travelling to Ghent by train from the Netherlands or another Belgian city.

You’re not staying right in the historic centre, but I actually didn’t mind this at all. The tram takes you quickly to Ghent’s main sights, or you can simply walk into the centre. Along the way, you’ll pass different neighbourhoods, coffee shops and independent stores, allowing you to see a little more of Ghent beyond its tourist centre.

I also discovered a few lovely addresses in this neighbourhood, including Katastrof for pre-loved fashion and Sans Style, which is practically opposite Hotel Chamade.

The rooms at Hotel Chamade

The rooms at Hotel Chamade are contemporary and calming, with natural tones and a fairly minimalist style. The interiors feel modern without being overly trendy. All rooms have a private bathroom, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. There are several room categories, including Comfort and Deluxe Rooms, and some rooms have a balcony.

We stayed in a lovely spacious Deluxe Double Room with a bath. The room had two beautiful chairs by Detjer, as well as a desk and coffee and tea-making facilities. It is always nice when you want to wake up slowly in the morning. We also had a lovely view across Ghent from our window.

The bathroom was particularly spacious, with a beautiful walk-in shower, two washbasins and a bath. Another nice detail was the selection of toiletries from The Curious Botanist. This vegan range has a warm yet fresh fragrance based on organic Sicilian blood orange, combined with sandalwood and tonka bean.

Breakfast at Hotel Chamade

Hotel Chamade serves a breakfast buffet every morning, with an emphasis on local and more sustainable products. Cheese and dairy products are sourced from local farmers, while the buffet also includes sourdough bread, Ghent-made jam, Fairtrade coffee and free-range eggs. I think this local approach suits a smaller hotel like Chamade particularly well and makes breakfast feel a little more personal than your average hotel buffet.

And the breakfast really was delicious. There were fresh croissants and pastries, bread and eggs, as well as yoghurt with a choice of granolas, coffee and tea. The atmosphere was wonderfully relaxed, too. We ended up spending a good hour and a half over breakfast – exactly how I like to start a slow day in Ghent.

A more sustainable stay in Ghent

Another aspect I liked about Hotel Chamade is its focus on sustainability. The hotel is Green Key certified and takes a practical approach to making more sustainable choices. It works with local suppliers, serves free-range eggs and pays closer attention to the origins of the products and materials it uses, as well as reducing waste. This makes Hotel Chamade an interesting option if you prefer smaller hotels that incorporate sustainability into their day-to-day operations.

What to do around Hotel Chamade

Although most visitors head straight to Ghent’s historic centre, there’s plenty to discover around Gent-Sint-Pieters too. From Hotel Chamade, you can easily walk towards Citadelpark, home to both S.M.A.K. and the Museum of Fine Arts.

If you enjoy shopping, I’d definitely explore Kortrijksesteenweg. This is where you’ll find Katastrof for pre-loved fashion, while Sans Style is almost directly opposite the hotel.

From here, you can continue on foot or take the tram towards the Kouter, Brabantdam, Kortedagsteeg and the historic centre.

Who is Hotel Chamade best for?

I’d particularly recommend Hotel Chamade if you’re travelling to Ghent by train and want a comfortable hotel within easy reach of Gent-Sint-Pieters.

The location may be less suitable if you want to step outside your hotel and immediately find yourself on the Graslei or wandering through Patershol. In that case, a hotel in the heart of the historic centre would be more convenient.

The advantage of Hotel Chamade, however, is that you can stay somewhere a little quieter while still having the railway station practically on your doorstep. It’s also a convenient base if you want to combine Ghent with other Belgian cities.

My experience at Hotel Chamade Ghent

We arrived in Ghent around midday and were able to get into our room at around 2.30 pm. From the moment we walked in, there was a wonderfully calm atmosphere throughout the hotel. Both the lobby and our room were decorated in soft shades of beige, with beautiful lamps and warm, ambient lighting – exactly the kind of interior I love.

Our room was spacious, the bed wonderfully comfortable and the staff incredibly friendly. I also loved the location: Hotel Chamade is just a few minutes’ walk from Gent-Sint-Pieters, so after arriving in Ghent by train, you can be at the hotel in no time.

Breakfast is definitely worth staying for and is perfect for a slow Sunday in Ghent: a leisurely breakfast, another cup of coffee and absolutely no need to rush. I’d happily stay here again.
